Principles of Classroom Assessment

The Assessment should:

ASSESSMENT WHAT IS IT?

PURPOSE

Interest Inventories

A questionnaire that students answer or respond to.

Gives insights into background knowledge, oral language abilities, feelings, and interests.

Concepts About Print

Assesses 24 basic print awareness elements, the student answers questions and performs certain tasks.

Helps teachers establish priorities in reading instruction for emergent readers.

Alphabet Knowledge Assesses alphabet knowledge in isolation and within words and sentences.

Lets the teacher know where the student is, following phonemic awareness.

Observation Survey A checklist of skills or literacy learning milestones that the teacher rates the child on (usually on a scale form 1-5).

Helps the teacher identify key developmental behaviors in emergent readers.

Reading Logs The student records the book or text they read along with the page numbers read. They record what they read during SSR on a daily basis.

This gives the teacher an idea of student reading habits and interests.

Running Records The student reads a selection from a book that are 100-200 words. The teacher records the students miscues. Used to determine reading level.

Helps to inform the teacher as to where the students are in their reading development and lets them place students in guided reading groups.

Retelling The student retells the story he/she has read.

Lets the teacher find out if the students understand the story.

Story Maps The student completes a story map.

Helps to determine whether a child understands the main part of a narrative story.

Questioning The student answers questions about a text they have read.

Helps the teacher assess the students reading comprehension

Family Surveys The student's adult family members periodically fill out this brief questionnaire.

Gives the teacher insights into reading behaviors at home. This can help them to develop a more accurate profile of the child's reading ability

Self-Rating Scales Asking the student or having them fill out a questionnaire rating themselves.

Lets the teacher know how the student views himself as a reader.

Portfolios The student and/or teacher collect samples of the students' development work.

This shows the student's growth and development. It also provides a window on the strategies used by students in reading and writing.
